Description
I tried installing gNewSense with both reasonable filesystems it offers(XFS and JFS) When the installer starts to create the filesystem, it stops the installation and puts up an error message “The xfs file system creation in partition #3 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) failed.” When JFS is attempted, the message says jfs. The same install works fine with Hardy Heron. The install on the same machine works if I use ext3, but I aborted after the file systems were created because I have no interest in an ext3 system. This was tested on two computers, a Dell GX150(Intel 815 chipset, 1GHz) and a Dell GX260(Intel 845G, 2.4GHz) with the same results on each system.

Thanks, added those 3. SVN 220. It’ll be the next LiveCD before you’ll know if this works. -bbrazil October 05, 2008, at 06:49 AM

Does this work with Hardy? We haven’t touched anything to do with filesystems, so I suspect this is an upstream bug. -bbrazil May 17, 2008, at 12:01 PM

Yes this does work with Hardy. I believe the issue occurs because some mkfs programs are not present on the gNS LiveCD. See the Ubuntu’s list from version 8.04:

and gNS’s list from version 2.1:

To be more specific, the following packages have been wrongly omitted from the gNS LiveCD:

  * jfsutils
  * ntfsprogs
  * xfsprogs
