Description
The BIND package copyright notice (http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/universe/b/bind/bind_8.4.6-1/bind.copyright) states, “This BIND software includes the DNSsafe software from RSA Data

Security, Inc., which is copyrighted software that can only be distributed under the terms of this license agreement.

The DNSsafe software cannot be used or distributed separately from the BIND software. You only have the right to use it or distribute it as a bundled, integrated product.”

Of course, almost all free software is copyrighted, but the statement “You only have the right to use it or distribute it as a bundled, integrated product.” makes DNSsafe non-free (although the exact license/EULA is unclear).

Resolution
Figured it out second time round. Packages with an epoch don’t put the epoch in the filename.

svn141 fixes this, and removes bind 8. Should be in the archives soonish. - bbrazil August 05, 2007, at 05:57 PM

I’m not sure this is a problem. Note that bind is in main. As well, from the debian bind changelog:

bind (1:8.2.2–2) unstable; urgency=low

  • patch from Paul Vixie to allow re-packaging upstream source without any of the encumbered crypto code! this release includes a new .orig.tar.gz upload, and all of BIND now moves back from non-free to main!

…So I’m a little confused. More research is probably needed.

However, one easy thing to do may just be to remove bind 8. The COPYRIGHT file for bind9 makes no mention of DNSSafe, and entry 464 in the changelog file shows that the code is being built against the openssl RSA implementation instead. JustinBaugh? July 18, 2007, at 05:15 PM
