Description
The status of the Artistic License (Called “Original Artistic License” by the Free Software Foundation) is unclear in gNewSense.

Debian has declared that the Artistic License meets the Debian Free Software guidelines, but the Free Software Foundation believes the ambiguous wording of the license opens up issues of Freedom.

gNewSense contains packages licensed under both the Original Artistic License and under the clarified version (which is, without question, Free Software).

Without a determination of the status of the Original Artistic License, it may not be possible to determine if packages are affected by bug #00001 (Contains Non-free).

Resolution
Reading the license, it is indeed a bit ambiguous, however it doesn’t seem to prevent any of the 4 freedoms. Accordingly it looks free to me, although if these packages were to switch to a clearer license that would be nice. -bbrazil August 28, 2007, at 03:16 PM
