license problems - cdrecord
Type

Date opened
Description
cdrecord uses a CDDL licensed build system which the FSF sees as a GPL violation.
Status
Closed
Importance
3
Target Release
none
Resolution
switching to the debian cdrkit fork would fix the CDDL problem, but not all licensing problems. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=387783
  — The cdrkit fork does NOT solve the issue, in my opinion. There are still potentially GPL violating functional restrictions in the code itself that make this package non-free. -Kevin Dean

SVN 159 removes these bits, in the same way Debian did. -bbrazil February 10, 2008, at 01:46 PM

Comments
there has been a long discussion about this and it can really only be solved through a court, but since this distribution is supported by the FSF one should follow the FSF point of view.

could use wodim?

wodim aka cdrkit still has some unresolved licensing problems. See the debian-bug #387783 mentioned above.

UPDATE: That debian-bug has now beed marked as “fixed”. So if gNewSense-project approves the way that bug has been “fixed”, then switching to cdrkit would seem to solve the cdrecord-issues.

if we want to use wodim/cdrkit as a cdrtools replacement, we have to build it (ie backport it) ourselves. kgoetz.
